See the enchanting sculptures in Gatineau, Quebec

Take a walk on the floral side with this spectacular and enchanting living sculpture exhibit in Gatineau, Quebec for Canada 150.

In my ongoing effort to see more of Canada in 2017, I found myself in Ottawa for the Canada Day celebrations. I spent Canada Day in the capital to celebrate Canada 150 this year, enjoying the fireworks, musical entertainment and the sights. The next day, while people still recovered from the party on steroids, I headed across the river to Gatineau, Quebec to marvel at the living sculptures.

Did you know? Mosaiculture is the art of creating designs out of flower beds.

MosaiCanada150 has 32 exhibits set up in a one-kilometre loop in Jacques-Cartier Park. The loop takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to wander through. If you’re like me, you’ll be there for hours exploring all there is to offer.

The towering plant structures represent provinces, territories, Canadian literature, music and myths, legends and history in five sectors.

The first sector gives you “a ticket for Canada”. Here you can see a train and a train station, all made out of plants and flowers. The next sector takes you on “a ride across Canada”. Explore the provinces and territories through the sculptures chosen to represent them. Try to guess which one represents which province or territory!

The next sector takes you on “a trip to China” where the Chinese cities of Shanghai and Beijing wanted to show their friendship to Canada on its 150th birthday.

Take “a journey through time” in the next sector. See how the flower beds take on key historical events in Canadian history. Lastly, take a “journey into the imagination of the First Nations” with a floral rendition of their stories.

The centrepiece of the exhibit is Mother Earth.
